Trial of a Dervish without a Defense Attorney; Mohsen Azizi Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

Mohsen Azizi is one of hundreds of imprisoned dervishes whose family says he was tried in the Revolutionary Court without the right to a defense attorney and sentenced to three years in prison.
Mr. Azizi was arrested after being beaten by security officers following the Golestan 7 protests on March 2, 2017.
Niloufar Dowlatshah, the dervish's wife, told VOA that Mohsen Azizi was sentenced to 3 years in prison by Judge Ahmadzadegan in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court without a lawyer on charges of gathering and colluding to act against national security. By issuing this verdict, Mr. Azizi has called the Iranian courts unfair and has refused to appear in the appeal court.
According to Ms. Dowlatshah, Mohsen Azizi suffered fractures to his nose and knee due to the beatings by officers during his arrest. With more than 10 months of detention and no medical attention, his physical condition is not good and he needs to undergo surgery.
