Afghan Defense Minister and Chief of Staff Resign

The Afghan president has accepted the resignations of the country's defense minister and army chief of staff. The two generals decided to step down after more than 140 soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack on a military base in Afghanistan.
The Afghan presidential office announced on Monday (April 24) that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has agreed to the resignations of Defense Minister General Abdullah Habibi and Chief of Staff of the Afghan Armed Forces General Qadam Shah Shahim.
The news of the resignation of the Minister of Defense and Chief of Staff of the Afghan Army was published by the Office of the President of the country on its Twitter account.
Shah Hassan Murtazawi, a spokesman for the Afghan presidency, told Reuters that the resignations of the two generals were due to the Taliban attack last Friday (May 1) on an Afghan army military base near Mazar-e-Sharif, located in Balkh province in northern Afghanistan.
An Afghan government official in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif announced on Saturday that at least 140 soldiers had been killed in the Taliban attack.
