15-Year Prison Sentence for Saba Kordafshari Reconfirmed After Acquittal in Appeals Court

Saba Kordafshari, an imprisoned civil activist who was previously acquitted of a 15-year prison sentence on charges of “spreading corruption and obscenity” in appeals court, has been convicted again on the same charges.
Hosein Taj, Saba Kordafshari’s defense lawyer, announced the confirmation of this news by posting a statement on Twitter, stating that this imprisoned civil activist and opponent of mandatory hijab informed him via a phone call from Evin Prison on Tuesday, June 6, that her 15-year prison sentence on charges of “spreading corruption and obscenity,” from which she had previously been acquitted in Branch 36 of the Appeals Court, has been re-served to her in a new letter from the prison’s enforcement department.
According to this legal representative, after Saba Kordafshari’s phone call and by referring to the enforcement department of the Evin Prosecutor’s Office, he discovered that the contents of the appeals court ruling on the basis of which this civil activist had been acquitted have been altered; this is despite the fact that, according to this legal representative, he had previously personally received Saba Kordafshari’s acquittal ruling by attending Branch 36 of the Appeals Court.
Saba Kordafshari, an imprisoned civil activist and opponent of mandatory hijab, had previously been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to 15 years imprisonment on charges of inciting corruption and obscenity, 7 years and 6 months imprisonment on charges of assembly and conspiracy to commit crimes against national security, and 1 year and 6 months imprisonment on charges of propaganda activities against the system, which was reduced to 9 years in appeals court with her acquittal from the charge of “inciting corruption and obscenity.”
Rahele Ahmadi, the mother of this imprisoned civil activist, was also arrested on Saturday, February 16, after appearing at Branch 3 of the enforcement department of Tehran’s General and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office and was transferred to Evin Prison to serve her sentence. She had previously been sentenced to 4 years and 2 months imprisonment by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court.
The U.S. State Department has repeatedly condemned the violent conduct of the Islamic Republic regime toward the Iranian people under various pretexts, including treatment of freedom of choice in clothing, as well as repeated and continuous violations of the rights of Iranian citizens by regime agents.
