“30% Increase” in School Dropouts Among Primary School Students in Iran

Coinciding with statements by the deputy minister of science regarding 44 percent unemployment among university graduates in Iran, the Farhaghestan newspaper reported a 30 percent increase in the dropout rate at the primary education level.

According to Ali Khairaldin, deputy minister of technology and innovation at the Ministry of Science, 44 percent of the country’s unemployed are comprised of university graduates, most of whom are “agriculture graduates.”

This statistic is released alongside increased brain drain of Iran’s university elites, which has surged at an unprecedented rate in recent years.

Previously, Abumohammad Mortazavi, the then-official of the Supreme Leader’s office for Iranian students abroad, had stated regarding the poor employment situation for university graduates in Iran: “Iranian graduates abroad would do better not to return to the country to avoid disappointment.”

Another report indicates that the number of school dropouts or students who have fallen behind in their studies during the primary education period in Iran has increased “noticeably.”

According to the Farhaghestan newspaper, in their investigations they concluded that the dropout rate in primary education in Iran has increased by “30 percent.”

The report cited “high cost of education, the despair of the underprivileged class from competing through this path for development and progress, and remote learning” as causes of this concerning increase in dropout statistics.
