A Labor Activist from Sanandaj Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison

In recent days, Kamran Sakhtemandgar, a labor activist from Sanandaj, was sentenced to 6 years in prison by the Revolutionary Court of the city.

The Campaign to Defend Political and Civil Prisoners announced on Tuesday, December 10, that the labor activist, who had previously been arrested in September of this year by the Sanandaj Information Bureau agents, was sentenced to six years in prison by the First Branch of Sanandaj’s Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Hossein Saeedi, on charges of “cooperation with one of the Kurdish opposition parties to the Iranian government” and “propaganda against the system.”

It is unclear to Voice of America which Kurdish opposition party these citizens are members of.

According to the report, Kamran Sakhtemandgar was sentenced to five years in prison on the charge of “cooperation with one of the Kurdish opposition parties to the Iranian government” and one year in prison on the charge of “propaganda against the system,” which under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code regarding the consolidation of sentences, only five years of this sentence will be enforceable.

The labor activist was arrested on September 13 of this year by agents of the Information Bureau and, after 85 days, was temporarily released from Sanandaj Central Prison with a bail of 200 million tomans pending the completion of investigation proceedings.

Previously, Voice of America had reported that two other Kurdish citizens from Urmia named Shervan Soleimanzadeh and Sheida Najafiana were sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison by the Revolutionary Court on charges of “membership in one of the Kurdish opposition parties.”
