A Sanandaj Resident Sentenced to Five Years in Prison for Cooperation with a Kurdish Party

«Mohammad Amin Kananeh», a Kurdish activist from the village of «Takhta» in Sanandaj, has been sentenced to 5 years in prison.

 

The human rights organization Hengaw reported on Monday, June 24, that Mr. Kananeh was sentenced by the first branch of the Sanandaj Revolutionary Court to five years in prison on charges of «cooperation with one of the Kurdish opposition parties to the Iranian government».

According to the report, the prison sentence was suspended and was issued on March 31 of the current year by Judge Saidi.

Mohammad Amin Kananeh was previously arrested on October 15 of last year after being summoned to the news headquarters of the Sanandaj Information Office, and after 100 days of detention, following the interrogation period and completion of the case, he was temporarily released on February 24 of the same year by posting bail of 200 million tomans, pending the completion of the investigation process.

In February of last year, Amnesty International described 2018 in a report as a «year of shame» for the Islamic Republic and announced that in that year, more than seven thousand people, including protest participants, students, journalists, women’s rights activists, environmental activists, labor activists, and ethnic and religious minority rights activists, were arrested in Iran.
