Acid Attack on Father and Son in Shiraz

According to a report from the Fars Province Police, a father and son were targeted in an acid attack on Saturday evening, July 8, in Shiraz.

According to Hamid Aframan, head of the Fars Police Information Center, the victims of this incident are a 42-year-old man and his 14-year-old son who were attacked by an unknown motorcyclist. They suffered injuries to their faces and hands from the acid attack and were transferred to a hospital.

So far, the perpetrator of this acid attack has not been identified, and there is no information regarding the possible motives behind the attack.

Acid attacks are among the incidents that are periodically reported from various parts of Iran. These attacks typically occur not with the intent to kill, but rather for revenge and to destroy the victim’s social life.

Various statistics have been published regarding acid attacks in Iran. Kamal Forutan, head of the board of directors of the Association for the Protection of Acid Attack Victims, stated in April 2019 that 52 or 53 people annually become victims of acid attacks throughout the country, with the highest number of cases occurring in Tehran and Isfahan.

According to Mr. Forutan, based on a two-year research study, 57 percent of acid attack victims were women and 43 percent were men, with an average age of 35 years.

In the most widespread acid attack incident in Iran, in 2014, four women in Isfahan became victims of this type of attack.

Despite 8 years having passed since the acid attack incident against women and girls in Isfahan, law enforcement officials say the perpetrators of this act have not been identified and revealed.

The incidents of acid attacks in Iran are recurring at a time when, following approval by the Iranian Parliament in 2019, “acid attacks intended to intimidate and create insecurity in society are considered acts of corruption on earth,” and the punishment, depending on the degree of harm to the victim, can result in the death penalty or retaliatory injury to the perpetrator.
