Another Detainee from November 2019 Protests Sentenced to Prison and Flogging

Ayoub Shiri, one of the detainees from the November 2019 protests, has been sentenced by Tabriz Criminal Court to imprisonment and flogging.

Ayoub Shiri announced on Monday, July 1st, by posting a court decision issued by Tabriz Criminal Court No. 2 on his Instagram page that the verdict was issued to him despite fabricated charges, and even the authorities issuing this ruling know that he committed no crime.

According to the above court decision, Mr. Shiri has been sentenced to one year in prison and 74 lashes on charges of “disrupting public order and peace.” It should be noted that the execution of the issued verdict has been suspended for one year.

Ayoub Shiri, pointing out that he has not committed any action that would indicate disruption of public order, stated: “This will be recorded in history, and God willing, there will come a day when they will be held accountable for each of their actions, and if that does not happen, then surely God does not exist.”

Based on available information, Ayoub Shiri was arrested on Sunday, November 17, 2019, following a raid by the Tabriz Intelligence Office at his workplace. After completing interrogation and charges being explained, he was temporarily released from Tabriz Central Prison on March 1, 2020, upon posting a 600 million toman bail until the end of the trial.

This is not the first time the Islamic Republic has sentenced one of the detainees from the November 2019 protests to prison. Previously, Voice of America had reported in multiple reports that some of these protest detainees have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

Protests against rising gasoline prices began on Friday, November 15, 2019, in various Iranian cities including Mashhad, Khuzestan, Ahvaz, Khorramshahr, and Behbahan, and gradually spread to all regions of the country.

The United States says the Islamic Republic is spending the country’s wealth on supporting terrorist groups and destabilizing the Middle East rather than on the Iranian people. The United States has also repeatedly condemned institutionalized financial corruption and the plundering of Iran’s natural resources by regime affiliates, citing them among the main factors in Iran’s economic and financial problems.
