Another Student’s Suicide Due to Inability to Afford Smartphone; Result of 40 Years of Government Neglect of People’s Deprivation

Just weeks after news of an 11-year-old child’s suicide due to severe poverty circulated, reports published on social media indicate that this time a 13-year-old female student has taken her own life due to lacking the financial means to purchase a mobile phone or tablet.

The suicide of Parastoo Jalili Azar, a 13-year-old student in Nazloo village in Urmia province, was first raised on social media, and some users and local media reported that the girl took her own life due to not having a mobile phone or tablet as an essential tool for remote education. Local authorities, including the Education Department of West Azerbaijan Province, confirmed the suicide of this teenage girl hours later.

Recently, the suicide of an 11-year-old child laborer named Seyyed Mohammad Mousavi Zadeh from Bardestan city in Bushehr Province became news. According to his mother’s account, he took his own life “due to not having a smartphone” to participate in virtual classroom sessions. Earlier, in March of this year, the suicide of a 12-year-old girl from Halilan in Ilam Province became headline news due to poverty and destitution and her inability to obtain holiday clothes.

The news of these suicides and the most recent case of the death of a teenage girl in Urmia has received widespread coverage on social media, and users have once again reminded the public of the inadequacy and ineffectiveness of the Islamic Republic’s authorities in meeting the basic needs of Iranian citizens.

While the rate of suicide among children and adolescents in Iran has increased, some social analysts believe that the economic crisis and despair in society have a direct impact on the increase in suicide in Iran.

On the other hand, the poor economic situation in recent months has worsened at a time when new dimensions of widespread financial corruption by individuals and institutions affiliated with the Islamic Republic regime are being revealed daily. Economic corruption cases involving government-close individuals and the unlimited financial support of this regime for terrorist groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas are among these instances of corruption.

America says the Islamic Republic is spending its country’s wealth supporting terrorist groups and destabilizing the Middle East instead of serving its people. America says the Islamic Republic is spending its country’s wealth supporting terrorist groups and destabilizing the Middle East instead of serving its people. The United States has also repeatedly condemned institutionalized financial corruption and the plundering of Iran’s God-given resources by those affiliated with the ruling regime in this country, and has identified them as among the main causes of Iran’s economic and financial problems.

Mike Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State, said about this not long ago: “The people of Iran have spoken clearly and loudly. They have rejected forty years of corruption and abuse and demanded an end to theft and an end to prioritizing the interests of foreign agents over the interests of the Iranian people.”
