Appeal Court Upholds 100-Year Prison Sentences for Ten Citizens

Branch 36 of Tehran’s Court of Appeal has upheld conviction rulings against ten citizens in social and political matters, sentencing them to over 100 years in prison, of which 53 years are enforceable.

According to a report received by Radio Farda, Sasan Niknesfat, Maryam Samghani, Alireza Hatami, Aliakbar Hasaniraad, Homayoun Parvizkar, Ali Motlabi, Amir Pournag Sarmadi Tehrani, Atallah Rezaei, Saeideh Ghorbanalil, and Yaseen Jamali Kasrinak have been collectively sentenced to 100 years and 4 months in prison by the Revolutionary Court.

The prison sentences for these individuals were issued in November 2019 by Branch 15 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court under the presidency of Judge Salwati, and Branch 36 of the Revolutionary Court has upheld these sentences.

In the court ruling, charges against these political and civil activists include “conspiracy and collusion against national security,” “propaganda against the system,” and “insulting the founder of the Islamic Republic and the supreme leader.”

These individuals, who were arrested in cities including Tehran, Gorgan, Qom, Tonekabon, and others, were also accused of supporting the monarchist system.

These ten political activists have also been sentenced to two years of prohibition from membership in political parties and groups, as well as activity in cyberspace, media, and press, and banned from leaving the country.

Currently, except for Aliakbar Hasaniraad, who is serving his sentence in Ward 4 of Evin Prison, the remaining individuals have been temporarily released from prison on bail.

According to the issued rulings, Aliakbar Hasaniraad has been sentenced to 16 years and 7 months in prison on four separate charges, of which, according to Islamic Penal Law, the maximum enforceable sentence is 7 and a half years in prison. Homayoun Parvizkar has also received the same prison sentence.

The appeal court judge has also sentenced Yaseen Jamali and Alireza Hatami to 14 years and 7 months, with each required to serve the maximum enforceable sentence of 5 and a half years in prison.

Maryam Samghani and Ali Motlabi have been sentenced to 5 years in prison. Sasan Niknesfat, Atallah Rezaei, and Amir Pournag Sarmadi Tehrani have each been sentenced to 8 years in prison, of which 5 years are enforceable.
