Atena Daemi Sentenced to Two Additional Years and One Month in Prison

Atena Daemi’s father, a civil activist serving time in prison, announced on Wednesday, October 7, news of his daughter’s new conviction.

Hossein Daemi wrote on his Twitter page that Atena, with less than a year remaining on her current sentence before release, has been sentenced to “two additional years and one month in prison.”

It is unclear what charges the new case against Atena Daemi relates to. Ms. Daemi, who is an opponent of capital punishment, has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges including “propaganda against the system,” “assembly and conspiracy against national security,” and “insulting the leadership.”

She was first arrested in the beginning of August 2014, a detention that lasted 16 months. She was then transferred to Evin Prison in December 2016 to serve her sentence, where she has been held since then.

This civil activist, in a letter recently published on the Hrana website on the occasion of the “International Day Against the Death Penalty,” stated that she is “not affiliated with any political faction” and that she “is in prison solely because of her opposition to execution and capital punishment, violence, and her insistence on human rights.”

She also emphasized in this letter the necessity of “solidarity and support” from the people to fight against forms of violence in society, including capital punishment.
