Authorities Warn of Corona Infection at Chaharshanbeh Suri Ceremonies; Possible ‘Seventh Wave’ After Nowruz Holidays

The head of Shahid Motahari Burn and Trauma Hospital in Tehran warned of the possibility of corona infection during Chaharshanbeh Suri ceremonies. Mostafa Dehmoradi said social gatherings should be avoided. He also emphasized that burns weaken the immune system and make individuals more vulnerable to corona infection.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the National Emergency Organization stated: “We thought citizens would comply, but about 200 people were injured and four died.”

Mojtaba Khaldi said the number of deaths on the last Wednesday of the year is higher compared to the same period last year.

According to statistics from Iran’s Ministry of Health, cases of corona infection and deaths in Iran continue to show an upward trend.

Based on these statistics, from March 23 to 24, 3,223 new confirmed cases have been reported in the country.

Also, in this 24-hour period, 117 more people died from corona infection.

Currently, 2,531 patients with corona are under intensive care.

The head of the health and prevention working group of the Corona Combat Command’s operational headquarters said society is still at risk of facing subsequent waves. Hamid Souri added that no “fundamental change” has yet occurred that would allow people to behave normally.

He said: “We may face the seventh peak of corona after the Nowruz holidays. Therefore, we should not be optimistic.”

The head of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences also says the increase in family visits and Nowruz trips to East Azerbaijan is “predictable.” Bahman Naghipour said Nowruz trips without observing health protocols will be “damaging.”

Compliance with health protocols in the country is estimated at 58 percent.

According to domestic Iranian media reports, about 56 percent of people use masks in public places.

Warnings about compliance with health protocols in Iran come at a time when there is no oversight in this regard. Previously, the head of the health and prevention working group of the National Corona Combat Headquarters told “VOA” that the country’s health interventions in the outcome of COVID-19 disease have not been “particularly effective.”
