Civil Activist Mohammad Nouri Zad Arrested After Signing Letter Demanding Khamenei’s Resignation

Mohammad Nouri Zad, a civil activist, was arrested and transferred to Evin Prison after reporting to the first branch of the prosecutor’s office in Evin District 33.

Mr. Nouri Zad was arrested on Wednesday, July 9, upon reporting to the first branch of the prosecutor’s office in Evin District 33 “to defend against the charges contained in his case file” and was transferred to the labor ward of Evin Prison after a bond of 100 million tomans was set.

Prior to this, the civil activist published his summons on his Telegram channel on Monday, July 7, according to which he was summoned to the first branch of the prosecutor’s office of Evin Court “to defend against the charges contained in his case file.”

The specific charges were not mentioned in this summons. However, it appears that this summons is related to a recent letter signed by several political and civil activists inside Iran, including Mr. Nouri Zad, who had called for the resignation of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

This civil activist, who was once among the supporters of the Islamic Republic system and its leader, became one of the government’s critics following the controversial 2009 presidential election. In recent years, he has written and published several open critical letters addressed to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

He has been arrested and imprisoned several times thus far.
