Congressional Democrats Join ‘No War with Iran’ Rally in Washington

Senator Jeff Merkley and Representatives Barbara Lee, Jim McGovern, Andy Levin, Jan Schakowsky, Pramila Jayapal, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Mark Pocan, and other congressional Democrats participated Thursday evening in a rally in front of the U.S. Congress in Washington titled “No War with Iran,” hosted by several American non-governmental organizations.

Jim McGovern, chairman of the Democratic Party’s Rules Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, said at the rally: “We want to emphasize our authority in the matter of war and peace, and that America has no intention of war with Iran.”

Congresswoman Barbara Lee also said: “The American people do not want unnecessary and catastrophic wars in the Middle East.”

Many congressional speakers emphasized that President Trump is obligated under the U.S. Constitution to obtain congressional approval before any military action against Iran.

According to Democratic Representative Mark Pocan, President Trump “made the most extreme decision, a decision that was rejected by previous Democratic and Republican presidents: killing Qasem Soleimani without consultation and legal congressional approval.”

Pocan said: “We want diplomacy, we want de-escalation and peace.”

On Thursday, “No War with Iran” demonstrations were also held in other U.S. cities.
