Court in New Zealand Sentences Christchurch Terrorist to Life Imprisonment

A court in New Zealand on Thursday sentenced the Christchurch attacker in New Zealand to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant, an Australian white supremacist attacker who believed in the superiority of white people, killed 51 people, including several young children and elderly individuals, in March 2019 by attacking two mosques in the city of Christchurch.

The individual, who was 28 years old at the time, published a 74-page “manifesto” before launching the attack on Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch and also livestreamed the killing of people in the mosque on Facebook using a camera mounted on his head.

This is the first time a criminal in New Zealand has been sentenced to the maximum punishment available in the country’s judicial system.

In the final court hearings, which lasted four days, 90 survivors and family members of the victims spoke to the defendant and condemned his actions.

Brenton Tarrant was charged with 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder, and one count of terrorism.

Prior to the final trial, he accepted the charges against him and dismissed his lawyers.
