Death toll in Spring 1399 in Iran was 19,000 higher than spring of previous year

Despite Islamic Republic officials announcing that the number of coronavirus deaths in Iran has been around 11,000 so far, registered mortality statistics in the Civil Registry Organization for the first quarter of spring 1399 shows approximately 19,000 more deaths compared to the same period last year.

Statistics registered in Iran’s Civil Registry system show that in the first quarter of this year, a total of 110,384 people died from various causes.

This number represents approximately 19,000 more deaths compared to spring of last year, and approximately 20,000 more deaths compared to spring two years ago.

Nevertheless, Iran’s Ministry of Health reported the number of coronavirus deaths in the first quarter of this year at around 9,000 people.

Iranian health and civil registry officials have not provided any explanation for the increase in mortality rate in the current year compared to statistics from the past two years.

Daily coronavirus statistics are announced in Iran while serious doubts have been raised about their accuracy, and according to some observers, at least regarding the death toll, there is a possibility that the actual number could be several times higher than the official figures.

Iranian Ministry of Health officials have stopped publishing detailed statistics without any explanation for several months.

It is unclear what caused the roughly doubled increase in deaths in spring of this year. However, this increase in mortality has occurred in all Iranian provinces, and the rate is higher in some provinces where coronavirus spread has been more widespread.

Among the provinces that have seen a significant increase in mortality statistics in spring of this year compared to previous years are Tehran, Gilan, Mazandaran, East Azerbaijan, Isfahan, Alborz, Khuzestan, and Khorasan.

Islamic Republic officials say the first confirmed case of coronavirus in Iran was identified on 30 Bahman of last year. However, many experts and even some government officials have said that the announcement of coronavirus entering the country was accompanied by deliberate delay.

Based on Islamic Republic’s official statistics, so far 10,670 people have died from coronavirus infection and the total number of patients has reached 225,205.

In recent weeks, the government’s order to lift restrictions and open public places faced a wave of protests.

However, following a sharp increase in daily death toll, Hassan Rouhani, the President of the Islamic Republic, announced on 8 Tir that wearing masks in public places would become mandatory from the following week.
