Details About Dormant IRGC Cells in Africa

Investigative reports show that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) maintains “dormant cells” in several sub-Saharan African countries for use against Western interests in these regions.

The official mission of Iran’s IRGC since its establishment has been to support the regime domestically and internationally and to prevent foreign interference. However, in practice, this role has transformed into expanding Iran’s arms beyond its borders.

Iran has wielded influence in several Arab capitals, and its espionage networks have been identified in European countries including Belgium and France, as well as other cells in North and South America. The African continent has not been spared from such Iranian activities.

Africa experts have monitored the establishment of dormant IRGC cells in sub-Saharan African countries, with the aim of these operations being to turn these nations into battlegrounds against Iran’s regional and international enemies.

In June, the British newspaper “The Telegraph” reported, citing Western officials, that the IRGC’s objective in creating these networks is to attack American and European targets, such as embassies, foreign military bases, and foreign personnel.

According to British officials in April, a network was identified in Chad and the Central African Republic whose members had been trained in camps in Iran.

Previously, in 2015, a network consisting of two Iranians and individuals from Kenya was identified that had organized bombings in Nairobi.

Research centers stated that Iran has spent billions of dollars in Africa through free social services such as hospitals, orphanages, and religious schools in order to expand its control over a region thousands of kilometers away.
