Did Donald Trump Pay Only $750 in Taxes?

On the eve of the U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump’s tax file has once again become controversial in American media. American media outlets have reported that Trump paid only $750 in taxes in 2016, the year of his election victory.
The issue of Donald Trump’s tax files has been disputed for years. The U.S. President has repeatedly claimed that he will release his tax documents and records, but has so far refrained from doing so. Now the “New York Times” has announced that it has obtained access to portions of these documents, documents dating from years after 2000.
According to the “New York Times” report, Donald Trump paid no taxes for a decade. Moreover, the amount of taxes paid by Trump in other years has been reported as very low.
$750 in Taxes
In its report, the “New York Times” wrote that Trump in 2016, the same year he won the presidential election, paid only $750 in annual taxes.
The same report indicates that the amount of taxes paid by Trump in the following year was also around the same level.
The “New York Times” continued in its report that Trump, by claiming that his losses from his economic activities exceeded his income, managed to avoid paying taxes.
Trump Denies the Report
At a press conference held on Sunday, September 27, at the White House, Donald Trump called the report published by the “New York Times” false and denied it.
Trump claimed that he has paid large sums of money at the federal level to the tax administration. The U.S. President said that he has even paid large sums in taxes to the New York State tax administration.
The U.S. President also criticized how the tax administration has treated him, saying that the agency has treated him very poorly so far.
Alan Garten, Trump Organization’s lawyer, also rejected the claims published in the “New York Times” report. Garten said: “Many of the statistics published by this newspaper, if not all of them, appear to be inaccurate.”
Trump Organization’s lawyer also claimed that the U.S. President has paid millions of dollars in taxes to the U.S. government so far.
Controversy Over Trump’s Tax File
It is customary for U.S. presidential election candidates to release their tax files. However, Trump has so far refrained from disclosing his tax files and documents.
During his 2016 election campaign, he repeatedly spoke of releasing his tax information, a promise that led to no action.
Now, in response to the “New York Times” report, Trump has announced that he will soon release his tax documents. However, he has not set a specific timeline for doing so.
Last year, the U.S. House of Representatives repeatedly requested Trump to provide Congress with documents regarding his tax payments. Trump, however, filed a lawsuit against this request and refrained from complying with it.
