European Union: Iran Should Disclose Details of Centrifuge Component Manufacturing

The European Union has requested that Iran share details of the production of components that could be used in atomic weapons with the agency. A week ago, the agency expressed concern about Iran’s resumption of production of centrifuge rotor tubes.

The European Union, through issuing a statement, has requested Iran to fully share details of the production of components that could ultimately be used in the manufacture of atomic weapons with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Associated Press news agency, in reporting this news, stated that a draft statement by the European Union was made available to the news agency on Friday (September 16/September 26). This statement is scheduled to be sent next week to a meeting of the Board of Governors of the United Nations Atomic Energy Agency. The statement was issued just one week after the agency announced the resumption of centrifuge rotor tube production in June in Iran. Despite emphasizing in its recent report that Iran has adhered to all provisions stipulated in the nuclear agreement, the agency expressed concern about the resumption of centrifuge rotor tube production.

For this reason, the European Union has called for “full cooperation by Iran” with the agency on this matter and has also requested the agency to share the information it receives with its members.

Iran currently has five thousand and 60 centrifuges with low-level technology. According to the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between Iran and six world powers), Iran is allowed to use parts from its old centrifuges to replace the centrifuges remaining. According to the atomic agreement, the agency must monitor how many centrifuge rotor tubes have been produced and for what model of centrifuge. Through this, the agency can ensure whether their number and the centrifuge model comply with the 2015 atomic agreement or not.

If the number of rotor tubes produced exceeds the permitted limit, it could be a sign of Iran’s hidden activities to upgrade its centrifuges, which would be a controversial matter. Access to advanced centrifuges means faster access to highly concentrated uranium, which could be used to manufacture atomic weapons.
