“Fewer Than 40 Iranian Leopards” Remain

The CEO of the Iranian Cheetah Society stated that referring to the declining population of cheetahs in Iran, probably fewer than 40 Iranian cheetahs remain.
Morteza Pourmirzaei in an interview published on Monday, September 1st by Mehr News Agency, while warning about the danger of “accidental extinction” of Iranian cheetahs, said it is possible that cheetahs may “die every day due to accidents, dog attacks, etc. in their habitat”.
Emphasizing that “critical conditions” exist, he spoke about policies for care and protection of Iranian cheetahs: “Currently, the situation of cheetahs has reached a point where preserving the species is preferable”.
Morteza Pourmirzaei mentioned measures such as purchasing and protecting pastures, employing and equipping rangers, and “implementing a breeding project under semi-captive conditions” as programs for reviving and preserving the cheetah population.
