Forensic Medicine: Road Traffic Deaths Increased by 9.3% in First 8 Months of Current Year

Official statistics show that deaths resulting from traffic accidents and road collisions in the first eight months of the current year (March to November 2021) increased by 9.3% compared to the same period last year. During the same period, the number of injured persons also increased by 10.9%.

According to Mehr News Agency on Wednesday, December 15, the Organization of Forensic Medicine announced that in the first eight months of this year, “11,773 people” died in traffic accidents, of which “8,715” cases occurred on intercity roads.

This report stated the number of deaths from traffic accidents during the same period last year as “10,774 people.”

Additionally, in the first eight months of this year, 217,159 people were injured in accidents. This figure was 195,800 people during the same period last year. Based on this, the number of injured persons in traffic accidents increased by 10.9% compared to last year.

The Organization of Forensic Medicine had previously announced that 17,000 people annually lose their lives on Iranian roads, but the former head of Iran’s traffic police said this casualty figure is also incorrect and they “manipulate the statistics” to lower it.

According to some experts, Iranian roads and “domestically produced vehicles” have low standards, and this issue has had a direct impact on increasing deaths from accidents, placing the country at the top of the global list in terms of the frequency of accidents as well as fatalities and injuries.
