Fulani Islamists Attack Three Christian Villages in Taraba State

Fulani Islamists attacked three Christian villages in Taraba State, killing approximately 42 people.

According to Christian Daily, armed men attacked three Christian villages in Taraba State in northeastern Nigeria on the morning of Saturday, May 24, killing approximately 42 people, and forcing hundreds of others to flee their homes.

According to the report, Fulani Muslims attacked the villages of “Munga Dosu,” “Munga Lelao,” and “Bandawa” in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, set houses on fire, and then carried out a massacre of the residents. Some informed sources regarding the attack stated: “Residents of Karim Lamido area, who are mostly Christians, have been attacked by Fulani Muslim herders. Their homes have been set on fire and more than 42 Christians have been killed.”

Agbu Kefas, Governor of Taraba State, while condemning these attacks, described the people of the aforementioned area as peace-loving and emphasized that the perpetrators of this crime will be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted under the law. Agbu issued a statement saying: “The security of our citizens is my top priority. We have taken all necessary security measures to prevent further violence and to hold the perpetrators accountable.”

James Leshen, spokesman for the Taraba State Police Command, also announced the deployment of police forces to the areas that were attacked.

Christian leaders in Nigeria also condemned the attacks by Fulani Islamists on Christian communities, stating: “Attacks by Islamists on Christian communities are rooted in their attempts to forcibly seize Christian lands and impose Islam, particularly as desertification has made herding, livelihoods, and cattle management difficult.”

The organizations “Open Doors” and the World Watch List also stated in their reports for the current year (2025) that Nigeria is one of the most dangerous countries for Christians to live in. According to the reports of these organizations, Fulani Islamist groups and Islamic State-affiliated Boko Haram splinter groups in northern Nigerian states, due to weak federal government control in these areas, attack these regions and their residents, who are mostly Christian communities, carry out violence and killings. Additionally, kidnapping for ransom has increased significantly in these areas in recent years.
