Honor killing: Young woman murdered by her husband in Rasht

A woman in Rasht was killed by her husband with knife wounds motivated by honor. The suspect cited suspicion of his wife’s relationship with another person as the reason for his action. Iranian law contains provisions that exempt individuals who commit “honor killings” from severe punishments.

According to Harana news agency, citing IRNA, a woman in Rasht was killed by her husband.

Based on this report, the suspect, identified in this report as 40-year-old Sohrab, killed his wife in one of Rasht’s neighborhoods motivated by honor.

According to the suspect: “I was hearing from all around that my wife was in contact with another man. I did not intend to kill my wife. I only wanted to hear it from her own mouth. My target was to kill the man who deceived my wife and went along with her. I had a knife with me that day and got into a confrontation with my wife. I threatened her on the street and she confessed to this infidelity. Upon hearing this sentence, my world collapsed and I struck her with the knife.”

Honor crimes or honor killings refer to acts of violence and often the murder of women in a family by their male relatives.

These women are punished for “bringing shame to their family’s honor.” This shame encompasses various matters, including refusal to enter into forced marriage, being a victim of sexual assault, divorce (even from an unsuitable husband), relations with the opposite sex, or committing adultery. For someone to become a victim of honor crimes, it is sufficient that it is merely suspected that they have brought dishonor to the family.
