Houthi Missile and Drone Attack on Saudi Oil Facilities

Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities mark a new chapter in the tensions arising from Yemen’s six-year war. In recent days, Houthi insurgents have launched several missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia.

The target of the missile and drone attack on Sunday evening, March 7 (Esfand 17), was one of Aramco’s oil facilities as well as several military areas in Saudi Arabia.

The French news agency reported on Monday, March 8 (Esfand 18), from Riyadh of a new missile and drone attack by Houthi insurgents on Saudi Arabia.

It is reported that the Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi territory occurred shortly after the bombardment of their positions in Sanaa by forces of the Saudi-led military coalition. Sanaa is under the control of Houthi insurgents.

News agencies have reported escalating tensions and expanding military confrontations between the Saudi-led military coalition and Houthi insurgents. This comes as the United States is attempting to end this six-year war.

Saudi Defense Ministry Statement

The Saudi Defense Ministry announced that the Houthi drone attack targeted a large oil tank in Ras Tanura. Furthermore, a ballistic missile was also launched toward Aramco oil facilities in Dhahran, located in eastern Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Defense Ministry stated that this missile landed near the residence of Aramco workers and employees. It is reported that thousands of Aramco staff members live with their families in residential units adjacent to these oil facilities.

This news source, citing Saudi officials, announced that the aforementioned missile attack resulted in no casualties or material damage.

Houthi insurgents, in a Twitter post, claimed responsibility for the drone and missile attack on Ras Tanura and alleged that they also attacked several military targets in the Dammam area, located near Dhahran.

On Sunday, Saudi state television reported the destruction of ten Houthi drones. Saudi Arabia believes that removing Houthis from the list of terrorist organizations has been a factor in increasing their attacks.

President Joe Biden’s administration removed Houthi insurgents from the terrorist organizations list after taking office. Adding this organization to the terrorist organizations list was among the final actions of Donald Trump’s administration before the end of his term.
