Increased Danger for Human Rights Defenders in Iran and the Region

An international organization supporting human rights defenders has warned of increased dangers for human rights defenders in Iran and the region, calling for practical support from the global community.

Front Line Defenders, an international organization headquartered in Ireland, has expressed deep concern in its latest statement about significant increased threats to human rights activists, coinciding with intensified military conflicts in Iran and neighboring countries. This concern is being voiced as border clashes and military attacks continue in the region, and the security of human rights defenders faces unprecedented challenges.

According to the organization’s statement, periods of escalating armed conflicts and political instability are typically accompanied by increased pressures and dangers for civil activists and human rights defenders. When rule of law is weakened and multiple armed actors are present in different areas, the space for suppressing activists through arbitrary detention, threats, violence, and other forms of human rights violations becomes more conducive.

The organization emphasized in this statement that human rights defenders play a vital role in documenting violations, supporting victims, and holding perpetrators of human rights abuses accountable, but currently these individuals face greater danger due to the dangerous and unsafe conditions in the region.

A notable section of this statement addresses the situation of imprisoned human rights defenders in Iran. This human rights institution has warned that during military crises, prisoners’ access to medical services, contact with families, and independent monitoring may be seriously restricted, and their lives may face greater danger.

Front Line Defenders has also referenced reports indicating that security measures in Evin Prison have been tightened and food distribution in the prison has been disrupted, an issue that has increased concerns about the security and welfare of prisoners, particularly human rights activists in the ward.

Concerns about the situation of prisoners in Iran have also been emphasized in other reports. Some sources, citing human rights activists and families of detainees, say that with ongoing military tensions, prison conditions, particularly in Evin Prison, have deteriorated, and the risk of repeating similar tragedies from previous periods has increased.

Furthermore, independent reports have shown that explosions and attacks near prisons have damaged their facilities and increased fears of spreading dangerous conditions for foreign and Iranian prisoners. Some of these reports mention that windows and ceilings of certain sections of the prison have been hit, and conditions for contact with families and provision of food and water have become severely difficult.

Human rights defense organizations and other international bodies have also expressed concerns about the human rights situation in Iran in recent weeks. For example, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warned at the Human Rights Council session of increased risk of execution of death sentences and widespread human rights violations following the suppression of protests.

Independent reports also show that ongoing military conflicts have caused many civilians, prisoners, and human rights defenders in Iran and across the region to face threats and life and humanitarian dangers, including internet cuts, restrictions on family contact, and increased arrests without legal access.

In its final statement, Front Line Defenders has called on all parties involved to remain committed to their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights frameworks. The organization stated that preventing attacks on places where human rights are pursued and protecting defenders in danger should be among the priorities of the global community.

Furthermore, the organization has called on member countries of the global community to take practical measures to protect human rights defenders in Iran and the region, including support in emergency asylum matters and facilitating protective assistance, not merely statements alone.
