International Atomic Energy Agency: Iran Continuously Increases Uranium Enrichment

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran increases uranium enrichment by far more than its commitments every month. He emphasized that Iran does not currently have the necessary amount of uranium for nuclear weapon development.

Rafael Grossi expressed concern that Iran “increases uranium enrichment every month.” The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency emphasized that today Iran enriches uranium far more than its commitments under the nuclear agreement (JCPOA).

Grossi said in an interview with the Austrian newspaper “Presse am Sonntag” that Iran’s nuclear program has made significant progress and the country now has “great capability” for nuclear weapon development; however, he emphasized that Iran does not yet have sufficient enriched uranium for bomb production.

In response to a question about when Iran would be ready to produce nuclear weapons, he said: “The Atomic Agency does not give an opinion on a specific timeline; we only report on the amount of uranium or plutonium needed to build a nuclear bomb and Iran currently does not have enough.”

The Director General of the Atomic Agency confirmed that despite the constraints caused by the coronavirus pandemic, a team of Agency colleagues is constantly in Iran and monitors the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.

Grossi, in response to a question about the possibility of nuclear competition in the Middle East between Iran and Saudi Arabia, said that Saudi Arabia is still in very preliminary stages, but emphasized that they have launched detailed programs and intend to build “ten nuclear power plants or more.”
