Iran Claims to Have Paid Compensation to Some Families of Ukrainian Plane Crash Victims

Iran’s deputy foreign minister claimed on Tuesday that compensation has been paid to some families of victims of the Ukrainian plane shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Mohsen Baharvandd, during a visit to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and a meeting with ICAO officials, stated that “so far, some families of victims of the Ukrainian plane crash have received compensation.”

According to the Fars News Agency report, Mr. Baharvandd presented a report on “technical investigation of the accident and follow-up on criminal aspects” at this meeting.

Iran’s Cabinet had previously approved paying $150,000 to the Iranian and non-Iranian survivors of victims of the Ukrainian plane shooting, but many families had rejected this amount.

Some families, along with the governments of Canada and Ukraine, have called for Iran to provide a convincing explanation regarding “the intentional firing of a missile by the Revolutionary Guard Corps.”

The latest round of negotiations between Iran and Ukraine took place in October of last year.

Yevhenii Yenin, Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister and head of the negotiating delegation, said last week to Radio Farda about the reason for the prolonged delay in continuing negotiations: “There was a long pause because we were waiting for the Iranian side to fulfill the promises it made in the previous round of negotiations. Apparently we have witnessed some developments, but if we look at the details and depths of the issue, we realize that many of our questions remain unanswered.”

Ukrainian plane flight number PS752 was shot down on January 8, 2020, by at least two air defense missiles fired by the Revolutionary Guard Corps, and all 176 passengers on board, most of whom were Iranian and Iranian-Canadian dual citizens, were killed. Citizens of Afghanistan, Britain, Germany, Sweden, and Ukraine were also killed in the incident.
