Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development: Seven New Cities to be Created

Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and CEO of the New Cities Development Company says seven new cities have been located in the country and have received approvals from the Supreme Council of Architecture and Urban Planning, and planning is underway for the creation of these cities.
Habibollah Taherkhani said on Tuesday, July 22, to the IRNA news agency that currently 17 new state cities with a capacity of approximately four million people are being developed on 40,000 hectares of state land, and 800,000 people have settled in these cities, with projections indicating their population will exceed 2.5 million within the next five years.
He said that Piroozi is currently the most populous new city in the country, followed by Andisheh and Sadra, Pardis, and Golbahар in subsequent rankings.
Taherkhani further stated that recently two new cities have been launched in the area between the towns of Chabahar and Konarak and Ivankuh in Semnan Province and 55 kilometers from Tehran.
His reference was to the project of constructing residential complexes and cities within the framework of the “Mehr Housing” plan, which in recent years has been accompanied by widespread protests and dissatisfaction regarding the low quality of buildings and lack of infrastructure. This project began during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
On the other hand, Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s President, said on July 21 while inaugurating one of his administration’s last projects that “the government has no responsibility for housing construction, but providing facilities is the government’s responsibility.”
Reports indicate that delays in delivering Mehr Housing units under the pretext of inflation control have caused disruptions in housing supply and construction, leading to increased migration of people to city outskirts and the sale or rental of rooftops and renting rooms or multi-story containers for storage purposes in Iran.
