Iran’s Health Ministry Restricts Coronavirus Testing

Ibrahim Shakiba, Deputy of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, says coronavirus testing in Iran has been limited to people over 60 years old and high-risk individuals.

According to IRIB News Agency, this restriction has been implemented according to a circular from the Ministry of Health, with the reason cited as limited access to testing equipment, “difficulties in sample collection” and “risk of disease transmission during sampling.”

Based on this report, henceforth the priority for coronavirus screening will be limited to people over 60 years with underlying diseases, pregnant women, prisoners showing symptoms of infection, some drug users and those in contact with these two groups, and foreign nationals showing symptoms of coronavirus infection.

The implementation of restrictions on coronavirus testing was announced even though Iranian government officials had previously stated that there were no shortages in conducting tests and related equipment.

According to Health Ministry officials, by Monday, May 29, a total of 1,610,869 coronavirus tests have been conducted in Iran.
