IRGC Confiscates Dozens of Homes and Shops in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced on Tuesday, the third day of Farvardin, that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has confiscated dozens of homes and shops in Deir ez-Zor province and handed them over to its supported militia forces.

Simultaneously, Turkey’s official news agency Anadolu reported that the IRGC has confiscated 60 homes belonging to residents of Deir ez-Zor and the al-Bukamal area in recent days.

These areas are located in eastern Syria and south of the Raqqa region. It was recently reported that Russian military forces, upon entering the Raqqa area, have “expelled” Iranian forces and their supported militias from oil-rich regions.

It remains unclear where the expelled Iranian forces and their supported militias, particularly Liwa Fatemiyoun, which had a presence in Raqqa, have relocated.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that Iranian military forces have confiscated 10 homes and 30 shops in the Deir ez-Zor region in recent days under the pretext that these properties belong to “opponents of Bashar Assad’s regime,” and have placed them under the control of their supported forces.

The report states that some of the confiscated shops are also being rented out to raise funds for militias.

Deir ez-Zor is a region that forces loyal to Bashar Assad, with the help of Iran and Russia, recaptured from ISIS forces in November 2017, and many of its residents have fled the area; a matter that Anadolu News Agency also referenced, stating that the IRGC has confiscated the homes of war refugees.

Anadolu states that “the Assad regime has granted Syrian citizenship to some foreign terrorists fighting in support of the regime, and through this method has paved the way for confiscating the homes of Syrian citizens for their benefit.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported that the “Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas” group, supported by the IRGC, confiscated a gas station in the city of al-Mayadin in Deir ez-Zor province on March 13, approximately 10 days ago.

Deir ez-Zor is located in eastern Syria near the Iraqi border.

The Syrian civil war ignited 10 years ago with the bloody suppression of peaceful protests by opponents of Bashar Assad’s government, which continues to this day. Estimates from the opposition monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, indicate that over 388,000 people have been killed in this war, of whom approximately 117,000 were civilians.

Bashar Assad has held power in Syria since 2000 following the death of his father, Hafez Assad.

During the 10-year civil war, he relied on assistance from Russia and Iran, while Turkey and Saudi Arabia provided support to the rebels. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2254, an international roadmap for peace in Syria, which has never been implemented.
