The terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for two suicide attacks on Thursday, February 22nd in Baghdad. The explosions resulted in 32 deaths and more than 110 injured.

The terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility on its Telegram channel for the deadliest suicide attack in Iraq in the past three years.

During the attack, two terrorists detonated their explosive vests in quick succession in the center of a crowded market at Tayaran Square in Baghdad. The suicide attack occurred on the morning of Thursday, February 22nd, resulting in 32 deaths and injuries to more than 110 people.

Iraq’s security situation had improved noticeably in recent years, but the country continues to suffer from the consequences of the battle against the terrorist group ISIS between 2014 and 2017. During this period, the Sunni extremist group controlled areas in northern and western Iraq.

During those years, and concurrent with the battle by the Iraqi government and the U.S.-led international coalition against ISIS, numerous suicide attacks occurred in Iraq. The latest and deadliest of these attacks was in January 2018, when two suicide bombers killed 38 people in a crowded Baghdad marketplace.
