Israeli National Security Advisor: Iran’s New Nuclear Facility Will Not Be Safe from Attack

Tzachi Hanegbi, Israel’s National Security Advisor, said on Tuesday, June 22, that Iran’s new nuclear facility under construction will not be safe from attack.

This comes as expert assessments have shown that these nuclear facilities are being constructed at such depths within the Zagros mountain range that “it is unlikely that even the most advanced American bombs could damage them.”

Tzachi Hanegbi made these remarks in response to an Associated Press report citing experts who had stated that Iran’s new nuclear facility is likely being constructed at a depth of 80 to 100 meters underground.

The experts’ assessments cited in the Associated Press report show that the United States’ latest bombs have the capability to penetrate to a depth of 60 meters underground.

Hanegbi made these remarks at a security conference near Tel Aviv. Noting that Iran also has other underground facilities, he said the Associated Press report did not surprise him.

According to Israel’s National Security Advisor, although these nuclear facilities are being constructed in a location that complicates any military strike, there are still solutions to overcome these challenges.

He added: “What can be said about this is that no location is inaccessible.”

Hanegbi refrained from commenting on whether Israel itself would be capable of carrying out such strikes.

He said: “We hope we do not reach a point regarding Iran’s nuclear weapons where we resort to attack as a solution.”

The Associated Press reported on Monday, June 21, citing videos and satellite images provided to the agency by American company Planet Labs PBC, that excavation volumes near the Natanz nuclear facility have increased significantly.

According to the report, the excavation of these underground tunnels within the Zagros mountain range in central Iran began in late 2020.
