Mandatory Hijab in Iran Now Extends to Men; Head of Women’s Basij: Men Are Also Required to Observe Hijab

As enforcement against opponents of mandatory hijab in Iran has intensified, the head of Iran’s Women’s Basij said that men are also required to observe hijab.

Minu Aslani, head of the Women’s Basij in Iran, told the Mehr news agency on Tuesday, the 18th of Tir, that hijab is not exclusive to women and men are also obligated to observe it, as the use of hijab for men is also a “public demand.”

This Basij official did not specify what type of clothing is meant by “hijab for men.”

The head of the Women’s Basij added that based on “documentation,” the positive effects of dress in creating peace and mental health of society members, particularly men, has been proven.

Enforcement against opponents of mandatory hijab in Iran has intensified in recent months. Police and judiciary officials not only report enforcement against cases of what they call “improper hijab” or “no hijab” in vehicles, but it has also recently been announced that police enforce against what they describe as lack of hijab inside airplanes and airports as well.

The U.S. State Department has repeatedly condemned the violent actions of the Islamic Republic regime against the Iranian people under various pretexts, including enforcement against freedom of choice in clothing, as well as the repeated and continuous violations of the rights of Iranian citizens by regime agents.
