Masih Alinejad’s Brother Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison

The defense lawyer of Alireza Alinejad announced that the Revolutionary Court, in its initial ruling, has sentenced his client to eight years in prison.

Alireza Alinejad was arrested at his home in Tehran last September, and according to his sister Masih Alinejad, a journalist living in America, the only reason for his arrest was that he is the brother of Masih Alinejad.

Saeed Dehghan, Mr. Alinejad’s lawyer, wrote on Wednesday on Twitter that the Revolutionary Court of Tehran issued the eight-year prison sentence on Wednesday, which consists of five years imprisonment for “assembly and conspiracy with the intent to act against national security,” two years imprisonment for “insulting the leadership,” and one year imprisonment for “propaganda against the system.”

Masih Alinejad, by sharing this ruling on her Twitter, wrote: “Eight years in prison for being a brother.”

Ms. Alinejad wrote that “criminals who only know executions and hostage-taking” could not force her brother “only because of my activities” and to “disavow” after months of pressure and solitary confinement.

Amnesty International had previously strongly criticized the arrest of Alireza Alinejad and called the detention of a person to silence his sister an “audacious and cowardly act” by the Islamic Republic.
