Official death toll from coronavirus in Iran surpasses 7,500

Kianush Jahanpour, spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Health, announced that with the deaths of 57 coronavirus patients and the identification of 1,787 new cases, the number of deaths and confirmed cases in Iran reached 7,508 and 139,511 respectively.

The reported figures represent the latest official statistics on coronavirus victims and cases in Iran, which were announced on Tuesday, the 26th of Khordad.

According to Jahanpour, of the newly confirmed cases, 352 patients were hospitalized. Additionally, 1,435 of these individuals had contact with previously confirmed cases.

Currently, based on official statistics, 2,567 COVID-19 patients are under care in critical condition, and 109,437 patients have recovered.

This health ministry official also emphasized the necessity of continuing to maintain physical distancing, avoid unnecessary travel, and use masks in crowded places to combat the spread of the coronavirus in Iran.

Mehr News Agency, citing the commander of the coronavirus response headquarters in Tehran, reported that the “coronavirus scenario” in the city has not yet ended.

According to Mehr News Agency’s Tuesday report, Alireza Zali asked Tehran citizens to observe “health precautions” with greater care.

He, however, reported a 15.3 percent decrease in hospitalizations in regular and specialized hospitals in Tehran compared to the past 48 hours, but identified “respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces” as the two main factors in the transmission and spread of coronavirus in Tehran.

Zali asked the public in a densely populated city like Tehran to be more “vigilant” and not allow “fatigue and the passage of time” to lead to “leniency” in observing health and safety principles.

According to him, investigations show that “more than 50 percent of hospitalized coronavirus patients were present in crowded and congested environments” and contracted the disease.

High-risk trades and businesses are scheduled to reopen in Tehran in the coming days.
