Over 140,000 Children in Iran Have Dropped Out of School This Year

The Director General of Social Harms at the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare announced the identification of more than 140,000 out-of-school children in the current year.

Ahmad Reza Parande said on Wednesday, October 30th, that 141,000 out-of-school children were identified in the 2019-2020 academic year in the country, and the “causes of dropping out of school” for these children are under investigation.

The Director General of Social Harms at the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare identified “disability” as one of the primary causes of school dropout among children.

Previously, Massoumeh Ebtekar, Vice President of Iran for Women and Family Affairs, had announced that based on the latest statistics identified by the Ministry of Education, approximately 142,000 children across Iran are currently out of school in some form.

The number of out-of-school girls was also reported to be three to four times higher than boys.

On the other hand, official statistics indicate that there are more than 49,000 undocumented children in Iran, and children without birth certificates are deprived of basic children’s rights in Iran, including the right to education and treatment.

Recently, UNICEF also announced that as a result of recent floods in Iran, 100,000 children were deprived of education and thousands of children were deprived of primary health care.
