Poverty Line in Iran Rose by Approximately “38 Percent” in 2020

Iran’s Ministry of Cooperation, Labor and Social Welfare announced in a report that the “poverty line” in Iran in the year 2020 increased by “38 percent” compared to the previous year.
The poverty line refers to the minimum monthly expenses necessary for each person to meet basic needs.
According to an article in the newspaper “Donya-ye Eqtesad” dated August 22, based on a report from the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, one-third of Iran’s population—approximately 26 million and 500 thousand people—were below the “poverty line” in 2019.
According to this report, rising inflation in the food and beverage sector and increased housing costs were among the main reasons for the increase in the “poverty line” in Iran.
