Retirees’ Gatherings Continue in Shadow of Corruption Cases in Iran

As corruption cases have increased in recent months, a group of retirees once again gathered in front of the Pension Fund in Tehran, demanding an increase in their pensions.

The retirees’ gathering took place on Monday, June 20, in front of the Pension Fund in Tehran, with protesters demanding higher salaries, implementation of civil service law regarding wage equalization, and improvement of their insurance coverage medical services.

Retirees’ protests have intensified since late 2018, and several gatherings have been held so far to address livelihood issues.

These protest gatherings by retirees from various sectors, including educators, are taking place amid a situation where, following recent price increases, the number of economic corruption cases in Iran has risen, with some of the accused being government officials and well-known figures.

Recently, Milad Salehi, CEO of the Pension Fund, announced on his Instagram page the discovery of “hundreds of billions of tomans” in corruption within the fund.

Also, Mohammad Shariatmadari, Iran’s Minister of Labor and Cooperatives, whose son-in-law Hadi Razavi is accused of economic corruption, announced on June 2 that over 13,000 billion tomans in claims have not been received from Shesta Company (an investment holding company belonging to Iran’s Social Security Organization).

Recently, Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, tweeted about Islamic Republic officials, saying they have become involved in corruption instead of helping the people.
