Flogging Sentence of Two Young Men Carried Out in Public in Razavi Khorasan

A 74-lash flogging sentence for two young men from Golbahar city in Razavi Khorasan province, who were accused of “theft and harassment,” has been carried out in public.

According to FARS News Agency, Khalilollah Barzenooni, the prosecutor of Golbahar city, stated that this sentence was carried out “to prevent the occurrence of similar crimes.”

These two young men, who have also been sentenced to imprisonment, are accused of committing “acts of violence” during the theft of bags from two women, and riding over one of the women’s feet with a motorcycle.

The issuance and execution of flogging sentences, which are carried out based on Islamic Penal Code, has consistently been criticized by human rights organizations.

According to international laws, corporal punishments are prohibited, and the United Nations has repeatedly asked the Islamic Republic’s officials in its resolutions regarding the human rights situation in Iran to stop the use of corporal punishments—punishments that the international community considers “barbaric” and “medieval.”

Furthermore, Iran is committed under the “International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights” not to impose such “corporal and inhumane punishments.”

Nevertheless, Iran’s judiciary has in recent years carried out corporal punishments, including flogging, in numerous cases.
