Rouhani Calls US Approach to Revolutionary Guards ‘Wrong’

Iran’s president described the United States’ placement of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on its terrorist list as “an ugly announcement by the deceptive US government” and called it a “mistake.” The US implemented the placement of the IRGC on the terrorist organizations list last Monday.

Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s president, referring to the placement of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the US terrorist organizations list, called this American action “wrong and mistaken.”

Rouhani said today, Thursday, April 29 (April 18), at the ceremony marking the Islamic Republic’s Army Day: “The leaders of the American regime are drowning in their illusions. There is no doubt that today our armed forces are more powerful than ever.”

Iran’s president added: “America is angry because it cannot advance the plan that it designed as the plan of the century for this region due to the steadfastness of the Iranian nation and armed forces, but the path that America has chosen is a wrong and mistaken path.”

The United States government implemented its intention to place the Revolutionary Guards on America’s terrorist organizations list last Monday. This is the first time that America has placed a major military force of a country on its list of terrorist groups.

Hassan Rouhani, in another part of his remarks today, described the placement of the Revolutionary Guards on the US terrorist groups list as “an ugly announcement by the deceptive US government” and claimed that following this action “all people were united with the IRGC and will remain with the IRGC for the same reason that the IRGC has always stood with the people and will forever stand with the people.”

Rouhani also, referring to the fact that “the IRGC is present throughout the country in all national and service scenes,” said that “insulting the IRGC is insulting the armed forces and insulting the great nation of Iran.”

He also attributed the “root” of all problems in the Middle East to “either Zionism or American imperialism” and said that countries in the region “have had no problems with each other” and “if there is a problem, it is from others.”

The US accuses the Islamic Republic of contributing to instability in the region, particularly through its missile and space programs, which threaten Israel’s existence, as well as “interference” in the affairs of Middle Eastern countries.

The Revolutionary Guards, whose duty according to Article 150 of the Islamic Republic’s Constitution is defined as “protecting the revolution and its achievements,” is accused by the US of “terrorist activities” and conducting destabilizing measures in regional countries including Syria and Iraq. Political critics of the Islamic Republic also accuse the Revolutionary Guards of playing a role in persecuting opponents and suppressing civil protests.
