Shahla Jahanbin Released Early from Evin Prison

Shahla Jahanbin, a civil activist and one of the signatories of a letter calling for Ayatollah Khamenei’s resignation, was released early from Evin Prison on Monday, the 16th of Farvardin. Ms. Jahanbin was arrested on the 24th of Aban 99 after appearing at the sentence enforcement unit of Evin Prosecutor’s Office and was transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison to serve her 27-month sentence.

According to Hrana news agency, the news organ of the Human Rights Activists in Iran organization, on Monday, the 16th of Farvardin 1400, Shahla Jahanbin, a civil activist and one of the signatories of the letter calling for Ayatollah Khamenei’s resignation, was released early from Evin Prison.

Ms. Jahanbin was arrested on the 24th of Aban 99 after appearing at the sentence enforcement unit of Evin Prosecutor’s Office and was transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison to serve her 27-month sentence.

As of the time of this report, there is no precise information regarding the conditions and manner of this political prisoner’s release. However, in recent days, a number of political prisoners have been released early from prison. According to an amnesty and sentence commutation circular, out of 1,849 prisoners covered by this circular, only approximately 0.6 percent was allocated to security-related convicts.

In mid-Mordad 98, a letter signed by 14 civil activists calling for Ayatollah Khamenei’s resignation was published. Following the publication of this letter, several signatories were arrested and some were pressured. Subsequently, another letter with similar content was published under the title “14 Female Civil Activists.” Shahla Jahanbin was one of the signatories of the statement by 14 female civil activists calling for Ayatollah Khamenei’s resignation.

Ms. Jahanbin was arrested in late Mordad 98 in connection with this matter and was temporarily released from Evin Prison on the 22nd of Aban 98 upon posting bail of 500 million tomans until the end of legal proceedings.

Shahla Jahanbin, along with Giti Poorfazel and Zahra Jamali, who are currently serving their sentences in Evin Prison, and Shahla Antesari, were ultimately tried by the Tehran Revolutionary Court and each was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment for charges of assembly and conspiracy and propaganda against the system. Her sentence was reduced to 44 months of imprisonment due to factors including being a mother and having no criminal record. This verdict was reduced to 33 months of imprisonment through non-objection to the ruling and submission to the verdict. In accordance with Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, 27 months of imprisonment are enforceable for her.
