Six-Year Prison Sentence for Civil Activist Zila Karmazdeh Makvandi Upheld

Branch 36 of Tehran Province’s Court of Appeals upheld a six-year prison sentence for Zila Karmazdeh Makvandi, a civil activist.
Ms. Makvandi was convicted of five years imprisonment on charges of “assembly and conspiracy with intent to undermine national security” and one year imprisonment on charges of “propaganda activities against the system,” for a total of six years imprisonment.
According to Islamic Penal Code, the harsher penalty—five years imprisonment—applies in Ms. Makvandi’s case.
Zila Karmazdeh Makvandi, along with Raheleh Rahimpour, a human rights activist, was arrested on November 12, 2019 by security forces in Tehran and transferred to the Sepah Intelligence detention facility, known as Ward 2-A of Evin Prison.
Both were later temporarily released from Evin Prison pending trial after posting bail.
Ms. Rahimpour is the sister of Hossein Rahimpour, a political activist who was reportedly executed around 1984.
In recent years, she has been searching for her nephew named Golrou, who was born in Evin Prison, but there is apparently no information about his fate.
