Tax bills issued for ‘488,000 empty houses’ in Iran

The director general of the office for designing and analyzing tax processes announced the issuance of tax bills for ‘488,000 empty residential units’ and said that across the country, 13,000 luxury units have been identified from which nearly 500 billion tomans in taxes will be collected.

Jahangir Rahimi said on Tuesday, March 15, in an interview with ILNA news agency that the issued tax bills relate to the 9-month period of 1400.

He stated: So far, 570,000 empty properties have been identified, some of which have legal owners belonging to various institutions, and taxes are also collected from these institutions according to the law.

These statements come as Mahmoud Mahmoodzadeh, deputy minister of roads and urban development, announced on December 9 the identification of 2 million and 300,000 empty residential units in the country and said that ownership of 900,000 units is in the hands of government agencies.

Iranian government has imposed taxes on empty and luxury houses, vehicles over one billion tomans, gold purchases, coins and foreign currency to compensate for severe budget deficits.

The Ibrahim Raisi government in the 1401 budget bill has increased tax revenues by 62 percent compared to the current year.

Mr. Rahimi did not explain what the amount of tax on empty houses would be, but the head of the tax organization had previously said this figure would be equivalent to half the value of the monthly rent of an empty house.

Official statistics show that housing rents in Tehran in January have grown 51 percent compared to the same period last year.
