Tehran Police Announce Arrest of Suspect Accused of ‘Sexual Assault Against Dozens of Female Students’

The commander of Tehran Police announced on Tuesday, September 4th, the arrest of an individual accused of sexually harassing and assaulting dozens of women.
According to the Fars News Agency, citing Hossein Rahimi, commander of Tehran Police, police officers arrested the suspect, named “Keyvan Emamvardi,” today.
The arrest of this suspect followed disclosures by dozens of women users on Twitter and Instagram who, over the past week, one after another accused him of “assault after administering alcohol containing sedative substances.”
The scope of these disclosures, which began with the hashtag “sexual harassment,” has expanded significantly in recent days, and among the allegations, connections to some prominent figures in various fields have also emerged.
The head of Tehran Police cited “the volume of complaints and the wounding of public sentiments in society” as the reason for Emamvardi’s arrest and stated: “All complainants can confidently approach the public security police to file complaints, assured that their identities will be protected by police.”
The disclosures of the past few days on Persian-language social networks are reminiscent of the movement known as MeToo (Me Too), which began on social media in 2017 and was used by a very large number of women around the world to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment, particularly in the workplace, and to condemn it.
