Thousands Protest Against Lukashenko in Belarus; Dozens Arrested

Thousands of people in Belarus took to the streets on Sunday, December 6, to protest against Alexander Lukashenko, the country’s president, during which security forces arrested dozens of people.
The protesters are calling for Mr. Lukashenko to step down from power.
Since the controversial August presidential election in Belarus, protests have continued almost continuously in Minsk and other cities across the country, and this is the third Sunday that Lukashenko opponents have held “decentralized” demonstrations.
The opposition in this country has been attempting for the past three weeks to make it difficult for police to arrest and disperse protesters by conducting neighborhood-by-neighborhood gatherings.
The vote held on August 9 gave Lukashenko the helm of his sixth presidential term, but opponents believe that his rival candidate, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, is the real winner of this election.
The West has also refused to accept the results of this election and has imposed sanctions on Lukashenko and dozens of senior Belarusian officials.
