Two Iranian Nuclear and Judicial Officials Accuse Grossi of ‘Politicization’

Senior nuclear and human rights officials of the Islamic Republic accused Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, of “politicization.”

The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization says the Islamic Republic has provided “accurate answers” to questions from the International Atomic Energy Agency, but the agency’s reports are based on information that “enemies” of Tehran have provided to it.

Mohammad Eslami accused Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, on Monday in an interview with Al Jazeera news network of lacking “serious willingness to convincingly describe” Iran’s answers.

Eslami stated: “The International Atomic Energy Agency relies on intelligence reports from our enemies, with Israel at the top of them.”

Benny Gantz, Israel’s Defense Minister, said on June 6 that Naftali Bennett, the country’s Prime Minister, “did good work” by providing “information that Israel has about Iran” during a meeting with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Rafael Grossi, ahead of the Board of Governors meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said that Iran continues uranium enrichment on an ongoing basis and achieving “significant quantities that cross the red line is very close and not more than a few weeks away.”

According to him, “Iran has not provided explanations that are technically credible regarding the agency’s findings at three undeclared locations. Furthermore, Iran has not informed the agency of the current location or locations of nuclear materials or equipment contaminated with nuclear materials that were transferred from Turquzabad in 2018.”

Eslami, in another part of his interview, referred to the possibility of accepting a resolution against Iran at the current Board of Governors meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency and said: “Even if this resolution is passed, it will not create a new situation.”

France, Britain, Germany, and the United States have prepared a draft resolution to ask the Board of Governors of the agency to hold the Islamic Republic accountable for failing to answer questions about uranium traces in undeclared nuclear facilities.

In response, the Islamic Republic has warned that any political action against Iran’s nuclear program at the International Atomic Energy Agency will face “an immediate response from the Islamic Republic.”

Eslami urged the agency to “stop political interference within itself and adhere to the rules.”

The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization also called the agency’s “failure to criticize” attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites a “major question” and warned: “The agency’s access to films and video recordings is contingent on the fate of the [JCPOA] agreement.”

In recent years, there have been several attacks on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities or killings of individuals referred to as nuclear scientists.

KazemReza Gharibafsari, Secretary of Iran’s Human Rights Headquarters, also claimed on Monday, June 6, that the approach of Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, is “political.”

He added: “Mr. Grossi has strong political tendencies and this cannot be denied. Reports from all agency directors general have been influenced by political pressures, but some of the agency’s positions are also due to the political approaches of the agency’s directors general.”

The Deputy for International Affairs of the Judiciary, stating that “Westerners have made their decision regarding this political action [issuing the resolution] and the US has also supported it,” warned that this action would cause “serious damage to initiatives on the table.”

Without providing further details, he added: “If we cannot prevent such a resolution from being issued, we must make its issuance costly for those who issue it.”
