U.S. State Department Criticizes Situation of Religious Minorities in Iran

The U.S. State Department, in its annual report on religious freedom in countries around the world, stated that despite promises made by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to improve the situation of religious minorities, no progress is visible in this regard.

Six pages of this report, which was released on Tuesday, were devoted to Iran, stating that Baháʼís and Christian converts in Iran face suppression and discrimination.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry described the report as “unrealistic” and said it was prepared “solely for specific political exploitation.”

Meanwhile, the Baháʼí International Community in Geneva and Article 18, an organization active in the field of rights of Iranian Christians, say that “suppression, detention, and deprivations of Baháʼís and Christian converts” in Iran continue.

And in this week’s continuation of Deriche Magazine:

  • Prevention of several Baháʼí students from enrolling in universities
  • One-week detention of Hassan Fathi, a journalist in Tehran
  • And news from several other political and ideological prisoners in Iran
