UN: Coronavirus Threatens Livelihood of Over 1.5 Billion Workers

The International Labour Organization says the lives of approximately 1.6 billion people worldwide are threatened by the coronavirus epidemic. Around 305 million full-time jobs have been lost globally.

The coronavirus pandemic has threatened the livelihood of approximately 1.6 billion men and women workers worldwide. According to a report by the International Labour Organization, affiliated with the United Nations, approximately 2 billion people were affected in the first month of the epidemic’s spread.

The International Labour Organization announced on Wednesday (April 29) that daily wage workers, who are deprived of unemployment insurance and health coverage, are considered the first victims of the epidemic’s expansion.

These underprivileged segments, who lack stable employment and fixed income, have lost up to 60 percent of their earnings due to coronavirus. For these men and women, unemployment means losing food, livelihood, life, and future.

Countless companies and enterprises worldwide are on the brink of collapse. Most small and medium-sized enterprises have no savings and cannot access bank credits. If they do not receive assistance as soon as possible, they will cease to exist and will drag countless others into poverty and hardship along with them.

According to the International Labour Organization, the situation has worsened day by day in recent weeks. Working hours have decreased by approximately 10.5 percent compared to the period before the coronavirus crisis. Consequently, approximately 305 million full-time jobs have been lost worldwide.

With the spread of the coronavirus epidemic in most countries, most enterprises related to daily life have either been closed or have become partially closed. In the United States, European countries, and Central Asia, widespread unemployment awaits workers and wage earners.

According to the International Labour Organization’s estimate, approximately 3.3 billion people worldwide are employed in various occupations and are working and striving.
