UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: Discrimination Against Women in Iran Has Intensified

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a recent report on the human rights situation in Iran that discrimination against women in the country has intensified following the subsiding of recent popular protests in Iran.
According to this statement, which was published on Wednesday, June 23, on the website of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, street protests in Iran have decreased, but it appears that harassment of women, including for what they wear or do not wear, has truly intensified.
Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, says that Iranian women and girls face strict legal, social, and economic measures due to the enforcement of discriminatory hijab laws.
Mr. Türk further stated: “I call on the Iranian government to heed the calls of Iranians for reforms, and to begin this process by abolishing mandatory hijab regulations.”
He also called on the Islamic Republic to refrain from issuing death sentences against protesters.
Since the beginning of nationwide protests in Iran, triggered by Mahsa Amini’s death in custody of the morality police, the European Union has sanctioned 216 individuals and 37 institutions of the Islamic Republic in response to the suppression of protesters and human rights violations in Iran.
However, in recent weeks, not only have arrests of women’s rights defenders increased, but a new wave of executions of protesters has begun.
The new wave of executions in Iran has sparked widespread domestic and international reactions, with many critics calling for “punitive” measures to be taken against the Islamic Republic.
In the latest case, Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi, and Saeid Yaghoubi were arrested in connection with the deaths of two members of the Basij and a colonel of a special unit during evening protests on November 16, 2022, in the “Khane Isfahan” neighborhood, and were executed on charges of “moharebeh” (enmity against God) after forced confessions were extracted.
