US State Department: Waiting for Iran’s Constructive Response on JCPOA Revival

Ned Price, spokesman for the United States State Department, said on Tuesday, June 14th, that America is waiting for a “constructive response” from Iran regarding the revival of the nuclear agreement known as the JCPOA.

The US State Department spokesman emphasized that Iran must set aside demands beyond the JCPOA.

Price’s reference likely alluded to the Islamic Republic’s request to remove the Revolutionary Guards from the United States’ terrorist organization list and to provide guarantees that Washington will not withdraw from the agreement in the future.

The US State Department spokesman, responding to a question about statements made by Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister, regarding the presentation of a new proposed package, said: “As we and our European partners have previously stated, we are ready to finalize the agreement reached in Vienna immediately and implement it. An agreement that has been ready in recent months to allow us to mutually return to JCPOA commitments.”

Ned Price emphasized that for such an agreement to be achieved, Iran must set aside demands that go beyond the horizon and framework of the JCPOA.

The US State Department spokesman continued, “We have made clear what our position is and where we stand. We believe that if Iran makes this political decision, the agreement can be finalized and we can easily return to JCPOA commitments mutually.”

Nevertheless, Price warned that if Iran does not pursue such an approach, the conditions for a mutual return to the JCPOA will become more complicated than ever before.

The US State Department spokesman further stated that Washington has maintained regular but indirect contact with Iran through the European Union.

Ned Price said, “We are awaiting a constructive Iranian response, a response that does not include matters beyond the JCPOA.”

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on the same day that Iran has put forward “a new political package and a new initiative,” and the American side has “accepted” this initiative, but he also emphasized support for a Board of Governors resolution against Tehran.

In response to the critical resolution by the IAEA Board of Governors, which was passed due to Tehran’s “non-cooperation” with the agency, Iran took retaliatory measures, including the organization announcing that the Islamic Republic’s Atomic Energy Organization would shut down the agency’s surveillance cameras at several nuclear facilities and begin the process of installing advanced centrifuges.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed that Iran disabled 27 IAEA surveillance cameras at nuclear facilities in Tehran, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, however, said: “Now, alongside the resolution, there are further nuclear measures by the Islamic Republic of Iran, but we will not shy away from dialogue and negotiations.”

Meanwhile, the US State Department spokesman also emphasized that the United States is ready for a mutual return to JCPOA commitments and the lifting of sanctions as long as the JCPOA agreement serves this country’s interests within the framework of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
